Grand Rapids showcases Indigenous filmmaker's award-nominated films
The Grand Rapids Film Society is featuring Indigenous filmmaker Ishkwaazhe Shane McSauby in its Artist Showcase series. The event takes place on March 21 at Wealthy Theatre, starting at 7 p.m. McSauby will present four of his short films and participate in a discussion and Q&A session. McSauby, a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, is recognized for his unique filmmaking style. He has gained international attention, showcasing his work in tribal communities and festivals around the world. He is also a visiting professor at Grand Valley State University. One of his films, “Happy Thanksgiving,” has been featured in eight Academy Award-qualifying festivals. His latest project, “The Beguiling,” tells a darkly comedic story of a romance that takes a sinister turn. It premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and later at SXSW in the U.S. Chris Kotcher, the director of Wealthy Theatre, expressed excitement about dedicating a night to McSauby's work. The theater aims to connect the community through media, supporting local artists. Tickets for the showcase are priced at $5 for students and $8 for general admission.
