Grandmother fined for parking app mistake in Havering
A grandmother from east London received a £60 parking ticket after using an app incorrectly. Wendy Hill was driving her grandson Rorie to a playdate when she parked and tried to pay for a ticket. The ticket machine would not accept her cash or card, so she downloaded the RingGo app. Mrs. Hill selected the top option she believed was the car park but ended up paying for on-road parking instead. Later that day, she got a fine from Havering council. Despite pleading with them to consider her honest mistake, the council refused to cancel the fine. Mrs. Hill stated she is ready to take the matter to court. She emphasized she is "law-abiding" and was trying to keep her active toddler safe while using the app on the pavement. Although she acknowledged she "legally" paid for the wrong location, she argued the fine is unfair. After questioning her ticket, Havering council confirmed Mrs. Hill paid for street parking instead of the car park. Many others have contacted her, sharing similar experiences at the same location. One person spent time parking at night, thinking they paid correctly but received a fine upon returning. Havering council acknowledged the mistake and indicated they would look into canceling the penalty charge notice for Mrs. Hill.
