Graphite raises $52 million for AI code review platform
Graphite, an AI-driven code review platform, has recently raised $52 million in a new funding round. The company, backed by Anthropic, aims to improve coding practices using advanced technology. Interest in AI coding assistants is on the rise. A recent GitHub poll revealed that many developers are using AI tools. Some investors are eager to support startups in this dynamic area. Graphite's Series B funding was led by Accel, with contributions from Anthropic's Anthology Fund and other major investors. Founded in 2020 by Tomas Reimers, Greg Foster, and Merrill Lutsky, Graphite initially focused on mobile development tools. However, the startup pivoted to code review, offering AI-powered feedback on coding errors and possible improvements. The technology behind Graphite includes models from Anthropic and OpenAI. Lutsky explained that Graphite started as an internal solution for their own code review problems. Feedback from former Meta engineers helped expand its reach. Besides error detection, Graphite also suggests changes and summaries for code, while launching a separate tool named Diamond to automatically catch bugs. Graphite faces tough competition from other AI coding assistants like GitHub Copilot and tools from OpenAI. However, the company has distinguished itself by addressing safety concerns, allowing users to customize patterns and set security filters. In 2024, Graphite's revenue grew significantly, serving thousands of engineers across hundreds of companies. With the new funding, Graphite plans to enhance product development and expand its team in New York City. They have made their core code review platform free for all teams, enhancing its appeal to potential users. Overall, the company has raised around $81 million in total funding to date.
