Greek firefighters gain ground on deadly forest fire in southern Greece
Greek firefighters have made significant progress in controlling a forest fire that has burned for four days in southern Greece. The blaze, which has killed two people, is receding as crews focus on smaller fires in the area. Around 570 firefighters, supported by 11 aircraft and volunteers, are working to contain the fire, which has affected about 6,500 hectares. Evacuations were ordered for several villages, but firefighters have managed to protect them from the flames. This summer has seen a record number of forest fires in Greece, attributed to drought and high temperatures. The cause of the current fire is still under investigation, with negligence considered a likely factor.
