The Indian government plans to provide around ₹22,400 crore to support states in developing their transmission systems under the third phase of the Green Energy Corridor (GEC-III). This initiative is part of the budget proposal for the financial year 2026. Overall, GEC-III is estimated to cost ₹56,000 crore, with the central government covering 40% of the expenses. Key states involved in this project include Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh. Gujarat is expected to lead with over ₹29,000 crore in transmission projects, while Rajasthan will follow with more than ₹9,000 crore. Discussions about the project took place at a recent meeting with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, emphasizing the need for improved transmission networks to support the goal of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030. States are currently providing their feedback on the plan, which aims to enhance grid connectivity essential for solar and wind power. Earlier phases of the Green Energy Corridor program are either nearing completion or are actively being implemented across ten states. These earlier phases received central financial aid covering up to 40% of each project's cost. A spokesperson from the ministry explained that GEC-III will focus on strengthening the transmission infrastructure. This includes supporting states with substantial renewable energy resources and newly developing markets for renewables. The project began in 2015 and aims to improve both inter-state and intra-state transmission systems, including the establishment of Renewable Energy Management Centers (REMC). The ministry has reported progress on earlier phases, highlighting potential delays. Issues like land acquisition, legal challenges, and environmental clearances have slowed down some projects. The standing committee on energy has urged closer cooperation between the ministry and state governments to address these challenges and ensure successful implementation of the Green Energy Corridor.
