Greens propose $8.1 billion for home energy upgrades
The Greens have announced an $8 billion plan to help Australian homes and businesses install home battery storage systems and switch to electric-only appliances. This pledge comes as the country approaches a federal election. Under this plan, households can receive grants of up to $5,000 and low-interest loans of up to $10,000 for battery installations. Small businesses could get $10,000 in grants or $50,000 in loans. Additionally, households can access $10,000 grants and $20,000 loans for electric appliances, while small businesses can receive $25,000 grants and $100,000 loans. The Greens believe this policy will help reduce emissions and lower power bills over time. Greens leader Adam Bandt stated that supporting electrification in homes is a cost-effective way to achieve significant benefits for households. Currently, Australia leads the world in rooftop solar energy, but many homes, around 3.8 million, do not have battery storage. Sydney resident Ken Enderby expressed the importance of batteries, stating they are essential for using solar power effectively. Some independent MPs have shown support for the home battery initiative. Meanwhile, major political parties are also preparing solar policies to address rising power prices, as they gear up for the upcoming election campaign.
