Grocery prices in Ireland have risen significantly over the past few years. The Central Statistics Office reported that the Consumer Price Index increased by 1.8% compared to February last year. Research from Kantar shows grocery costs have surged by 3% in the same period. Cian McCormack conducted a comparison of his grocery expenses from 2021 to now. His findings indicated a striking 36% increase in his shopping basket. He found that what used to cost €53.70 now costs €71.73, an increase of €18.03. Some items saw even sharper price rises. Red peppers, for instance, went from 39 cent to 89 cent, marking a 128% increase. Prices for staples like butter, bread, and milk have also sharply increased. For example, the price of butter rose from €2.19 to €3.79, a 70% increase. The cost of two litres of whole milk jumped from €1.49 to €2.45, a rise of 64%. A sliced loaf of bread now costs €3.40, up from €2.40. Even eggs showed a price jump, rising from €1.99 to €2.25, a 12% increase. Damian O'Reilly, a retail management lecturer, explained that various factors contribute to these price increases, including global supply chain issues and rising labour costs. He noted that grocery prices are not likely to decrease soon. Retail Ireland stated that while prices have increased in Ireland, they have done so at a lower rate than the EU average of 33% since February 2021. However, many consumers are feeling the financial strain. A mother with young children expressed her frustration, stating that she sometimes skips meals to ensure her children are fed. Others feel the rising prices are unfair and that the government needs to take action. Saint Vincent De Paul has reported an increased number of people reaching out for food assistance. Head of Social Justice, Louise Bayliss, stated there is growing concern about families struggling to afford basic necessities as prices continue to rise.
