Guardians finalize position player roster for opening day
The Guardians' roster for opening day is almost ready. Manager Stephen Vogt announced that the 26-man roster for position players is set, barring any last-minute trades. The team will begin its season on Thursday in Kansas City. The confirmed position players include two catchers, Bo Naylor and Austin Hedges. The infield features Carlos Santana, Kyle Manzardo, Gabriel Arias, Brayan Rocchio, and Jose Ramirez. In the outfield, Steven Kwan, Lane Thomas, Will Brennan, and Jhonkensy Noel will be playing. Tyler Freeman and Daniel Schneemann will provide depth on the bench. Some familiar faces are missing from last season. Josh Naylor and Andres Gimenez were traded. Santana has joined the team to play first base, while Arias claimed the second base position. Notably, Ramon Laureano and Estevan Florial did not make the roster this year. However, there are still decisions to be made regarding the pitching staff. Four of the five spots in the starting rotation appear to be filled by Tanner Bibee, Ben Lively, Gavin Williams, and Luis Ortiz. The last spot is competitive with Logan Allen, Triston McKenzie, and Joey Cantillo all in the running. In the bullpen, Emmanuel Clase, Hunter Gaddis, Tim Herrin, Cade Smith, Paul Sewald, and Jakob Junis are confirmed. The final two spots are still up for grabs and may include McKenzie, Allen, Cantillo, and Andrew Walters. Vogt emphasized that the team is close to finalizing the rotation. He also expressed confidence in the ongoing competition for bullpen spots. On another note, Kyle Manzardo rested on Saturday due to a sore shoulder but is expected to return on Sunday. The Guardians will next face the Reds, with Vince Velasquez scheduled to start.
