Guardians finalize starting rotation; right field position uncertain
Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt has announced the team’s pitching rotation ahead of the new season. Logan Allen will be the fifth starter, while Triston McKenzie will start the season in the bullpen. Allen has had a strong spring training. He has a record of 1-0 with a 1.89 ERA and 19 strikeouts in six games, including three starts. Vogt praised his development from last season, highlighting the improvements Allen has made. Tanner Bibee will lead the rotation as the ace. He recently signed a five-year deal worth $48 million. Gavin Williams, Luis Ortiz, Ben Lively, and Allen will complete the starting lineup for the team, which won the AL Central title last season. McKenzie struggled during spring training, allowing 15 hits and walking seven batters over 12 innings. He had a difficult season last year, giving up an MLB-high 19 home runs before being sent to Triple-A. However, Vogt remains confident in McKenzie’s potential to return to the rotation. The outfield situation, particularly in right field, is still uncertain. Nolan Jones has returned to the Guardians after being traded from Colorado for Tyler Freeman. He showed promise in 2023 but had a rough 2024, playing only 79 games due to a back injury. Jhonkensy Noel is likely to be the starter in right field, with Jones and Will Brennan competing for remaining roster spots. Vogt noted that Brennan’s spot on the team is still not guaranteed due to the trade. Chernoff expressed optimism about bringing Jones back, believing he can make a significant impact.
