Guernsey reviews lasting health effects of COVID-19
Five years after Guernsey's first lockdown due to COVID-19, residents are reflecting on how the pandemic has changed their lives and health. Many people continue to feel its effects, especially those who developed Long Covid. Tamara O'Brien, a local woman, contracted COVID-19 during the second lockdown and now has Long Covid. She experiences physical challenges and must plan every detail of her daily life. Despite her condition, she still enjoys time with her children by focusing on crafts and finding ways to manage her energy. Anita Davies, an anti-natal teacher, adapted to the lockdown by moving her classes online. Initially hesitant, she received encouragement from parents who wanted her support. Many parents appreciated the chance to focus solely on parenting without the usual distractions of going out. Margaret Nicolle from Age Concern Guernsey highlighted the challenges faced by older adults during the pandemic. She maintained contact with vulnerable clients over the phone, noting that some struggled more than others, particularly those with dementia. Dr. Nicola Brink, Guernsey's public health director, expressed concerns about the impact of the lockdown on cancer screening programs. Many people avoided healthcare facilities out of fear of the virus. She urged eligible residents to participate in screening programs to ensure early detection of cancers, as the long-term effects of the lockdown on cancer rates remain unclear.
