Gujarat court acquits ex-IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt in 1997 custodial torture case

A Gujarat court has acquitted former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt in a 1997 custodial torture case. The court found that the prosecution failed to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt and did not obtain the necessary sanction to prosecute him. Bhatt, currently serving life imprisonment for a 1990 custodial death case, faced charges related to the torture of Naran Jadhav, who alleged he was tortured to extract a confession. The case against Bhatt was registered in 1998 after Jadhav's complaint. In March 2024, Bhatt was sentenced to 20 years in prison for a separate drug-planting case. He is also under investigation for alleged evidence fabrication related to the 2002 Gujarat riots.
