Gujarat government earns Rs 94 lakh from GIFT City liquor
The Gujarat government has earned Rs 94.19 lakh from liquor sales at GIFT City, a fintech hub where alcohol consumption is allowed since December 30, 2023. Although Gujarat is a dry state and prohibits liquor, the government made an exception for GIFT City to boost its business environment. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel shared this information in the assembly on Monday. He responded to Congress MLA Amit Chavda's question about liquor licenses in GIFT City. As of January 31, 2025, employees at GIFT City have consumed over 3,324 liters of spirits, 470 liters of wine, and nearly 20,000 liters of beer. Two companies have been given licenses to sell liquor in GIFT City: West India Recreation Projects Pvt Ltd and The Grand Mercury. This decision to allow alcohol sales was made to create a global business ecosystem, attracting international investors and technical experts. Under the new rules, hotels, restaurants, and clubs at GIFT City can offer wine and dine options but cannot sell liquor bottles to customers. Employees and owners of businesses in the area can obtain liquor access permits, and visitors can get temporary permits to drink at these establishments. Additionally, outsiders visiting Gujarat can purchase liquor from authorized outlets with a temporary permit.
