Gujarat government targets 7,612 individuals in crackdown
The Gujarat government has started a major crackdown on people accused of various crimes, including illegal constructions and power connections. This action follows a violent mob incident in Ahmedabad last week. The mob attacked people and damaged vehicles using swords and sticks. The violence was linked to a rivalry between two local strongmen. Police found that the chaos started over a dispute about a food stall. One strongman, Pankaj Bhavsar, reportedly sent his men to attack rival Sangram Sikarwar after Sikarwar's release from jail. When they could not find him, the attackers targeted bystanders instead. They were believed to be under the influence of alcohol at the time. In response, police chief Vikas Sahay ordered the gathering of a list of 7,612 individuals facing accusations. This list includes 3,264 bootleggers, 516 gamblers, and 2,149 people charged with crimes like assault. Earthmoving machines were used to demolish some illegal buildings shortly after the deadline for action expired. Months earlier, the Supreme Court had set rules against arbitrary demolitions. They emphasized that demolitions should not be used as punishment and that everyone deserves due process. Despite this, authorities are moving forward with their actions to ensure public safety. Police in Gujarat have already demolished 12 illegal structures and cut off 81 unauthorized power connections. Many individuals on the list are under police surveillance as further investigations are conducted. Authorities plan to demolish hundreds more illegal constructions and disconnect more power lines. To provide continued oversight, police have placed 724 people under preventive detention. They are encouraging the public to report any suspicious activities to help maintain safety in the community.
