Gukesh Dommaraju returns to Chennai as youngest world chess champion
Indian chess player Gukesh Dommaraju returned to Chennai on Monday after winning the World Chess Championship, becoming the youngest champion at 18. He received a warm welcome from hundreds of fans at the airport, celebrating his victory over China's Ding Liren. Gukesh expressed pride in bringing the trophy back to India, highlighting the support he felt from fans. His win has sparked interest in chess among young people in a country traditionally focused on cricket. Gukesh's achievements include becoming India's youngest grandmaster at 12 and winning the Candidates Tournament earlier this year. He is the second Indian world champion, following Viswanathan Anand, and will be honored by the Tamil Nadu government and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon.
