In Gurgaon, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) is working to identify and collect property taxes owed by defaulters. The MCG plans to gather Rs 300 crore in the fiscal year 2025-26. Recently, the MCG commissioner, Ashok Kumar Garg, instructed tax officials to speed up the recovery process during a meeting. Notices to property tax defaulters will be issued after the new councillors and mayor take their oaths on March 25. The MCG is preparing an updated list to reflect the current fiscal year's information. The same target of Rs 300 crore was set for the previous year, 2024-25. In the fiscal year 2022-23, the MCG aimed for Rs 500 crore in revenue but only collected about half. So far, they have earned Rs 196 crore by the end of the third quarter, meeting 65.3% of their target. Officials expect better results in the final quarter, and complete figures will be revealed at the fiscal year-end. As of November 2024, the MCG reported that defaulters owed Rs 1,881.4 crore in property tax. Out of this, 100 major defaulters are responsible for Rs 288.4 crore. The remaining amount is owed by about 4.9 lakh property owners. Some property owners have complained about being unable to pay their taxes due to issues with their property ID data.
