Gurugram officials seal taverns for regulation violations

Gurugram officials have taken action against taverns, known as ahatas, following a report about their illegal operations. Over the weekend, several ahatas closed, and two popular ones in Sector 29 were sealed on Monday for violating safety regulations. The report, published by HT on March 16, highlighted widespread issues in how ahatas operate, including open-seating areas not approved in their maps. The excise department has promised to continue the crackdown, and more taverns that break rules will face penalties. Amit Bhatia, deputy excise and taxation commissioner, stated that investigations are ongoing. Ahata owners, like Digvijay Chahar of Machan, are trying to fix their violations to reopen legally. Meanwhile, officials pointed out that taverns are not allowed to serve alcohol directly or operate in open spaces without proper clearances. Concerns have also been raised about illegal dance performances, which require special permits that many taverns cannot obtain. Additionally, some have built permanent structures in green areas or are using illegal diesel generators, contributing to air pollution. Residents are frustrated by the situation and demand stricter oversight. Gauri Sarin, founder of Making Model Gurugram, urged the government to step up enforcement against these illegal practices. Amit Jindal, a local residents' association president, criticized the lack of proper monitoring and enforcement, saying some ahatas quickly reopen after being sealed.
