H5N1-infected cow milk can transmit virus, flash pasteurization questioned

CNN May 24, 2024, 03:00 PM UTC

Summary: Lab experiments confirm H5N1 bird flu in raw milk from infected cows. Refrigeration doesn't significantly reduce virus levels. Vat pasteurization at 63°C for 5-30 mins eliminates the virus, while flash pasteurization at 72°C for 15-20 secs reduces but doesn't fully inactivate it. FDA found H5N1 genetic material in 1 in 5 milk samples. CDC advises against consuming raw milk. H5N1 found in 58 dairy herds in 9 states.
