Hailstorm devastates South Chhotanagpur villages and crops

On Friday, villages in South Chhotanagpur faced severe hailstorms and heavy rain, causing widespread damage. Areas like Gumla, Lohardaga, and Simdega were particularly affected, with significant destruction reported in Lohardaga. Lohardaga experienced the worst impact from the storm. Villagers in places such as Semra, Soranda, and Palmi suffered as hail damaged houses with roofs made of tiles and asbestos. Many residents sought shelter under their beds as the storm raged on. Reports indicate that crops were badly harmed by the storm. Livestock, including birds and goats, also suffered losses. "In Arru village, the hail covered the ground, creating a scene of devastation," said local resident Iliyas Husain. Gumla experienced similar conditions, with heavy rain and hail affecting poorer households living in huts. "The strong winds brought down trees, causing power outages and plunging the district into darkness," noted Brij Kishor Singh. Simdega's Thethaitangar and Kersai blocks were also impacted by the severe weather. The extended effects of the storm continue to be assessed as recovery efforts begin.
