"Happy's Place" drops Steve Howey's sperm donor storyline

NBC's sitcom Happy’s Place has undergone significant changes in its storyline, particularly regarding two main characters. In an interview, creator Kevin Abbott revealed that Steve Howey's character, Danny, was originally planned to be a sperm donor for Gabby, played by Melissa Peterman. However, changes were made when NBC requested a Christmas episode, which altered the show's direction. Abbott explained that the idea of Howey as a sperm donor felt inappropriate because of their history on the show Reba, where they played in-laws. He mentioned that it began to feel “creepy” and decided to abandon the plotline. Abbott also expressed enthusiasm about including other Reba cast members in future episodes. Another surprise for fans was a shift in the relationship dynamics for the characters Bobbie and Emmett. Abbott initially intended to develop their romance further in the first season, but due to time constraints, he had to hold off. He highlighted the importance of building relationships gradually in the show. Further character development also took place as the decision was made to change the nature of relationships and plotlines as the show evolved. Happy’s Place has proved popular enough to be renewed for a second season. Season 1 is currently available for streaming on Peacock.
