Hard Rock invests $50,000 in Gary convention center ads
Hard Rock Casino has invested $50,000 in advertisements promoting Gary as the site for a new Lake County Convention Center. The commercials, which are airing on television and online, focus on the benefits of choosing Gary but do not mention Hobart’s competing proposal. The advertisements aim to inform the public about the convention center and the economic opportunities it could bring, including job creation. Pat Kremer, a spokesperson for Hard Rock, stated that no tax dollars were used for these ads and that the project will not require new tax funds if Gary is selected. The 30-second ad features prominent community members, including Gary Mayor Eddie Melton, who expresses strong support for the project. The commercial highlights Gary’s location, one minute off the interstate, and calls Hard Rock "one of the world’s most successful companies." It officially launched on March 22. Erika Blackwell, communications officer for Gary, welcomed Hard Rock's effort, emphasizing their commitment to funding the advertisement without taxpayer money. The proposal for the convention center stems from Melton's earlier legislative work, although it faced challenges in securing a specific location. Lake County Commissioners are set to decide on the proposals from Gary and Hobart by May 31. Gary's plan includes a 145,000-square-foot convention center and hotel near the existing Hard Rock Casino. Meanwhile, Hobart's proposal features a larger facility at Patriot Park, along with extensive residential and commercial developments. Funding for the convention center is expected to come from gaming taxes, state matching funds, and a significant financial contribution from Hard Rock.
