Harford County proposes new transparent bag policy for schools
Harford County officials are seeking public feedback on a proposed policy for school bags. The new rules would require students to keep all backpacks in lockers during the school day. Only those with special needs could carry small, clear bags. The plan was introduced by school board President Aaron Poynton on Monday. It allows middle and high school students to use small, non-transparent bags for hygiene. Other items like athletic gear and musical instruments would also need to go in lockers. Students with medical or health needs, or those without lockers, could apply for permission to carry larger bags, but these would have to be transparent. If the policy is approved, it would take effect at the start of the next school year. Since 2021, students have been allowed to carry backpacks to transport school-issued electronics. This proposal comes after a tragic shooting at Joppatowne High School last September, which renewed calls for safety measures such as metal detectors and transparent bags. During the community input period, parents and students can share their thoughts through the school board's website. This feedback will be considered before any final decisions are made. The public input period ends at 11:59 p.m. on April 11.
