Heatwave alerts issued for Andhra and Odisha regions
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a serious heatwave warning for Andhra Pradesh. Fifty-nine mandals in the state are expected to face extreme heat. The warning is in effect for Thursday. Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Parvathipuram Manyam are among the hardest-hit districts. In response to the rising temperatures, the Odisha government has decided to change school hours starting April 2. Schools will operate in the morning to protect students from extreme heat. School exams will end on March 27, marking the transition to the new schedule. Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari noted that some areas, including Boudh and Sambalpur, are already feeling heatwave effects. The Energy Department is also taking measures to reduce power cuts during peak heat hours to ensure public safety. Additionally, a thunderstorm alert has been issued for South Bengal. The forecast includes strong winds and potential hailstorms on Thursday and Friday, impacting several districts. Kolkata is expected to experience rain and gusty winds, with daytime temperatures around 34°C. Overall, both Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are taking steps to cope with extreme weather conditions, as temperatures continue to rise across the region.
