Hello Kitty marks 50 years as a global icon and $80 billion franchise
Hello Kitty, created by Sanrio, celebrates her 50th anniversary on November 1, 2024. Initially designed in 1974, she quickly became a commercial success, generating an estimated $80 billion in revenue, making her one of the highest-grossing franchises alongside Pokémon and Mickey Mouse. Over the years, Hello Kitty has evolved from a character aimed at children to a global icon appealing to all ages. Illustrator Yuko Yamaguchi, who has shaped her image for nearly 45 years, introduced new designs and scenarios to keep her relevant, including products for older fans. Sanrio has diversified its offerings, with Hello Kitty now accounting for about 30% of its profits, down from 76% a decade ago. Despite this shift, Hello Kitty remains a significant part of Sanrio's identity, with renewed interest driven by nostalgia among fans who grew up with her.
