The Highland Park Players will perform a concert version of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" from March 28 to March 30. The event will take place at the McGrath Family Performing Arts Center in Wilmette, Illinois. The musical is based on Victor Hugo's novel about Quasimodo, a deformed bell ringer, and his love for the beautiful Esmeralda. Connor Giles, who directed "Ragtime in Concert" last year, is leading the production. The cast includes 24 performers, accompanied by an 18-piece orchestra and a 33-voice choir. Giles expressed his enthusiasm for the concert format. He believes it emphasizes the story, music, and dialogue, allowing the audience to connect more deeply with the characters. Andres DeLeon, who plays Quasimodo, shared that his character is learning to make choices for himself. Rachel Carreras portrays Esmeralda and describes her as a strong, empathetic fighter for justice. Both actors connected with their roles and the themes of the story. Director Giles noted that the themes of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" are still relevant today, exploring ideas of "otherness." Carreras agreed, stating that the story reflects ongoing issues of discrimination and acceptance in modern society. Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on March 28 and 29, and 2 p.m. on March 29 and 30. Tickets cost between $33 and $48. Reservations can be made at the Highland Park Players' website.
