Hilo man sentenced to 30 years for teen assault
Duncan Mahi, a 54-year-old man from Hilo, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the 2022 abduction and sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl. He pleaded no contest to first-degree sexual assault and kidnapping charges. Mahi's sentence includes a mandatory minimum of 20 years. The court ordered consecutive sentences for the two kidnapping charges, totaling 30 years, while a 20-year sentence for sexual assault will run concurrently. The girl was kidnapped from a beach, forced to smoke meth, and shackled inside a bus. She escaped the next day with help from bystanders after a witness recognized her from an Amber Alert.
