Himachal Pradesh budget prioritizes tourism development in Kangra
The Himachal Pradesh government is making significant plans to boost tourism in the Kangra region. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu presented the budget for 2025-26 on Monday. He highlighted a strong focus on expanding the Gaggal airport and developing tea tourism. The expansion of Gaggal airport is a key priority. The government aims to spend about ₹3,000 crore on this project. This expansion will allow larger aircraft to land, making travel easier and faster for tourists. The runway is set to increase from 1,376 metres to 3,010 metres. The land acquisition process has already started, and construction will begin once that is completed. The government also plans to promote tea tourism in the region. They will amend current laws to develop tea plantations as eco-tourism sites. This initiative aims to mirror successful models in states like Sikkim and Assam. CM Sukhu emphasized the potential of tea tourism to boost the economy and create jobs. He noted that Kangra is known for its tea, which recently received protected geographical indication (PGI) status from the European Commission. Additionally, the Pong Dam area will be developed as a tourism spot. The government has submitted plans for Nagrota Surian and other nearby areas to the Union ministry of tourism. A new zoological park is also being constructed in Kangra. Alongside this, officials announced a plan to build a modern planetarium to spark interest in astronomy among locals and visitors alike.
