Historic SS United States set to become largest artificial reef after rent dispute resolution
The SS United States, a historic ocean liner, is set to become the world's largest artificial reef after a long rent dispute was resolved. The conservancy managing the ship reached an agreement with Okaloosa County, Florida, to sink the vessel. A federal judge had previously ruled that the conservancy needed to present plans for the ship's relocation by September 12. The agreement with Okaloosa County is contingent on final approval from the court. The ship, which holds the transatlantic speed record, has been docked in Philadelphia since 1969. The process of cleaning, transporting, and sinking the vessel is expected to take at least 1.5 years and could cost over $10 million.
