HIV-positive individuals can now donate kidneys and livers to other HIV-positive patients
Health officials announced that HIV-positive individuals can now donate kidneys and livers to other HIV-positive recipients. This change, effective November 27, is part of the HIV Organ Policy Equity (HOPE) Act and aims to reduce transplant wait times. Previously, organs from HIV-positive donors were only used in research studies. The new policy is based on recent findings showing that transplant outcomes for HIV-positive recipients are similar to those from HIV-negative donors. The National Institutes of Health is also considering expanding this policy to include heart, lung, and pancreas transplants from HIV-positive donors.
