Hong Kong aims for 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualification
Hong Kong's football team is starting its journey to qualify for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup. The team will play their first qualifying match against Singapore on Tuesday. Defender Oliver Gerbig expressed optimism about their chances, saying their recent success is "changing the narrative" for Hong Kong football. Recently, Hong Kong achieved a record seventh consecutive win by defeating Macau 2-0. This winning streak has boosted the team's confidence. However, they face a tough challenge in their qualifying group, which also includes India and Bangladesh. Gerbig played the entire match against Macau and highlighted the importance of getting game time ahead of the qualifying matches. After arriving in Singapore, he watched Singapore lose to Nepal in a friendly match. He noted that while Singapore was not at full strength, their forwards are "quick and athletic," which poses a threat. Gerbig acknowledged that every game in the qualifying group will be difficult. He emphasized the importance of starting strong, given that they will be facing tough conditions in away matches. He believes the team is on the right path and aims to compete more effectively in future tournaments.
