Hong Kong board raises concerns over flower market's character in redevelopment plan
Hong Kong's Town Planning Board held its first public hearing on a redevelopment plan for the Sai Yee Street and Flower Market Road area. Board members expressed concerns that the famous flower market may lose its unique character in the process. While members acknowledged the potential benefits of revitalization, they emphasized the importance of preserving the market's spirit. One board member referenced the unsuccessful revitalization of Lee Tung Street, which lost its original identity after redevelopment. The Urban Renewal Authority announced plans in March to redevelop 31 aging buildings near the flower market. This project will impact around 275 households and 33 ground-floor shops in the area.
