Hong Kong bookstores continue to face significant challenges
Bookshops in Hong Kong are facing tough times but are still managing to survive. Despite high rents and limited space, some bookstores continue to thrive if you know where to find them. The challenges have increased due to stricter laws in recent years, including an old sedition law. This law has made some bookstores anxious about what they can sell. In 2022, a court ruled against a bookstore for selling children's books deemed to violate this law. As a result, several beloved independent bookshops, like Mount Zero Books and Bleak House Books, have closed. However, not all hope is lost. Some booksellers are still in business, finding ways to adapt. They are using creative strategies, taking advantage of supportive landlords, and relying on a community that loves unique and rare books. These stores offer a special charm that continues to attract readers. One example is Lok Man Rare Books. Its owner, Lorence Johnston, started this shop in 2006 after noticing the lack of rare-book stores in Hong Kong. Recently, the store moved to a new location in a luxury retail arcade in Central. Johnston provides a selection of fine and rare books in a cozy environment, inviting customers to stay and enjoy.
