Hong Kong court upholds acquittal of Lo Kin-hei
A Hong Kong court has confirmed that Lo Kin-hei, the chairman of the Democratic Party, will not face charges for his role in a 2019 protest. The Court of Appeal ruled against the Department of Justice's request to review his earlier acquittal. The judges stated that Lo's acquittal was reasonable and there was no need for the higher court to intervene. They also noted that the original trial judge had made errors in understanding the law on public order offences. Lo was arrested during a protest meant to distract police while major clashes occurred at Polytechnic University. He was among ten arrested but was the only one found not guilty. Four other co-defendants received prison sentences ranging from 14 to 18 months for their involvement. One more defendant was given nine months of rehabilitation detention for the same charges.
