Hong Kong man jailed for attacking ex-wife in sleep

A 69-year-old man has been sentenced to five years and eight months in prison for attacking his ex-wife while she slept. The incident took place in Hong Kong in 2021 after an argument about their relationship. Cheung Ka-cheung attacked his ex-wife, Zhang Cunhua, with a cleaver and a fruit knife. The High Court described the assault as "persistent and relentless." The couple had been married since 2009 but divorced in 2020 due to frequent arguments about money and living conditions. Despite their divorce, Cheung and Zhang continued to live together in their public rental flat with their daughter and Zhang’s son from a previous marriage. Zhang had been asking Cheung to remarry her since May 2021, but he refused, fearing she might take the flat from him. On the night of June 21, after both had returned from their night shifts, they fought again about money and remarriage. While Zhang was asleep, she awoke to a sharp pain in her head and saw Cheung standing over her with knives, threatening to kill her.
