Hong Kong police increase traffic enforcement after fatalities rise
Hong Kong police are starting a major effort to reduce traffic offences. This decision comes after a serious rise in fatal road accidents, which increased by 40% in early 2025. Officers will focus on both drivers and pedestrians. They will use tools like elevated filming and plain-clothes patrols to catch offenders. Superintendent Lai Siu-wai announced this plan, stating that it will include operations across the city. The operations will aim to target common issues such as speeding, reckless driving, and pedestrians not following traffic signals. Lai explained that this crackdown will be an ongoing effort. In addition to these new patrols, police will use existing traffic cameras on highways and junctions. They will also monitor surveillance cameras throughout the city. Offenders may be arrested at the scene or later if video evidence is available.
