Hong Kong protester receives 45-month prison sentence
A Hong Kong protester has been sentenced to 45 months in jail for his role in a riot during 2019. Chan Wai-yiu, 27, was part of a group of protesters who clashed with police in Wan Chai. In 2020, Chan left for Japan to avoid charges, but he returned to Hong Kong in 2022 to visit his sick mother. He was arrested upon his return. The protests involved setting fire to barricades and throwing petrol bombs at police officers. During the protest, police used tear gas and water cannons to try to control the crowd. Chan was arrested after officers struck him with a baton as he resisted. His case highlights ongoing tensions in Hong Kong following the pro-democracy protests.
