Hong Kong to celebrate intangible cultural heritage in June
Starting in June, Hong Kong will launch an annual event to celebrate its intangible cultural heritage. The initiative aims to showcase various crafts, performances, and traditions unique to the city. Activities planned for this first edition include bamboo pole noodles, dragon boat races, and cheongsam-making. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department announced this new venture on Friday, stating it wants to highlight Hong Kong's rich cultural diversity. Eve Tam Mei-yee, the department's deputy director, emphasized that there is a growing interest among young people and tourists to learn about history. Popular tourist spots like The Peak and Avenue of Stars are no longer the only attractions. Visitors now seek authentic experiences and insights into local culture. The initiative will focus on a selection of Hong Kong's 18 districts each year. It aims to present each district's intangible cultural heritage in depth. Manda Chan Wing-man, the department’s director, remarked that intangible cultural heritage is part of everyday life, not just museum showcases. City walks and performances will be among the engaging activities offered during the month.
