Hong Kong's Legislative Council election set for December 7
Hong Kong will hold its next Legislative Council election on December 7. This will be the second election held under the "patriots-only" electoral system. Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu announced this plan on Tuesday. Lee wants the election to be fair, just, and honest. He has asked the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau to prepare detailed plans to ensure everything runs smoothly. This includes training electoral staff and securing data systems. The election will choose 90 lawmakers. Lee hopes these lawmakers will love both the country and Hong Kong, and have the skills to serve the public well. The new electoral system, decided by Beijing, has changed the Legislative Council. The number of seats increased from 70 to 90. Forty of these seats will be chosen by an Election Committee made up largely of Beijing supporters. There will be fewer directly elected lawmakers, reducing their number from 35 to 20.
