Hope College wins men's hockey national title, 6-3
Hope College's men's hockey team achieved a remarkable victory, defeating the top-ranked Air Force Academy 6-3 in the national championship game on Saturday. This victory took place at the Centene Community Ice Center in St. Louis, Missouri. The Flying Dutchmen scored five goals in the third period, turning the game around after trailing 3-1. This championship marks Hope's fourth title in ACHA Division 3, adding to previous wins in 2018, 2021, and 2022. With a final record of 35 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie for the season, the team is moving up to ACHA Division 1 for the upcoming 2025-26 season. Coach Chris Van Timmeren praised his team's determination, noting that they played hard despite fatigue from five days of competition. Hope knew that scoring would create doubt in Air Force's mind as they sought to regain control of the game. The comeback began with Nolan Holtrop scoring the first goal in the third period, assisted by Brady Kingsbury and Casen Faustyn. Kingsbury later tied the game, with assists from Cade Pratt and Jake Onstott. Hope's offense surged, scoring twice in 31 seconds, securing a 5-3 lead. Griffin Riemersma scored the game-winner, and Holtrop sealed the victory with an empty-net goal. Hope outshot Air Force 38-30, showing strong performance, especially in the final period. This championship game was Hope's fourth appearance in five years and the eighth overall since 2010. Coach Van Timmeren reflects on the team's legacy, emphasizing their competitive spirit and sportsmanship throughout their years in the league.
