House GOP funding bill includes defense and ICE increases
House Republicans plan to vote on a stopgap funding bill to keep the government running through September 30. The bill includes a $485 million increase for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and a $6 billion boost in defense spending, while cutting nondefense spending by $13 billion. The legislation aims to fully fund core federal services without increasing overall spending. It also proposes significant pay raises for junior enlisted troops and support for federal wildland firefighters. However, Democrats criticize the bill for lacking specific funding directives and for potential cuts to various programs. Key cuts include reductions in funding for nuclear nonproliferation, Army Corps projects, and rural broadband. The bill would also limit Washington D.C.'s spending and not provide additional funds for disaster relief.
