Howrah residents protest subsidence, demand basic amenities
Residents in Belgachi, Howrah are angry and protesting after ground subsidence caused several houses to collapse. This disaster has affected many families, leaving them without homes and access to clean water. The subsidence began on March 21 and has disrupted water supply in several areas near a local garbage dump. On March 24, 2025, Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition, and Firhad Hakim, the Urban Development Minister, visited the site. They found locals, especially women, rallying for better living conditions and urgent government assistance. Water pipelines have been damaged, leading to severe water shortages. Residents faced flooded streets in some areas. During the visit, tensions escalated between Adhikari and police. Adhikari claimed he was injured by a police officer while trying to meet affected families. He shared details of the incident on social media, emphasizing his dedication to helping people in crisis. Minister Hakim addressed the situation, promising that government officials will come up with solutions in the next few days. He mentioned that the state is planning to build stable housing for those displaced, despite limitations in funding from the central government. He assured residents that their concerns will be prioritized as the government seeks to provide relief.
