Human remains found near Groton cemetery site
Human remains were found on Wednesday night near a cemetery in Groton. The police received a call reporting something suspicious outside the Colonel Ledyard Cemetery on Mitchell Street. When officers arrived, they discovered the remains during a search in the area. This location is close to Sacred Heart Church and School, as well as many homes. According to Lt. Travis Winkelman, the remains were not found inside the cemetery. Detectives and police officers, along with representatives from the New London State’s Attorney’s Office and the state police Major Crime Squad, investigated the scene for several hours. The remains have been sent to the state medical examiner for examination. Winkelman noted that it is still early in the investigation. A witness reported seeing many police officers at the scene Wednesday evening. However, on Thursday, there were no police barriers or indications of an ongoing investigation. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the City of Groton Police Department at 860 445-2451.
