Human Rights Watch urges international force to protect civilians in Sudan as violence escalates
Human Rights Watch has called for an international force to protect civilians in Sudan, citing a recent surge in violence by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The group has reportedly killed dozens and committed widespread sexual assaults in Gezira province. The RSF has controlled Gezira since December and intensified attacks following the defection of a commander. Over 135,000 people have fled their homes since late October, with reports of civilians being shot and women and girls being raped. The ongoing conflict, which began in April 2023, has resulted in over 24,000 deaths and displaced more than 14 million people. Despite international efforts for peace talks, recent negotiations have failed to establish a cease-fire.
