Hundreds protest Western Springs Speedway closure in Grey Lynn

Hundreds of people protested the closure of Western Springs Speedway in Grey Lynn. The speedway has been in this location for 96 years but will move to Waikaraka Park in Onehunga. Auckland City councillors voted 11-8 in favor of the move. This decision has upset many local fans of the sport. They gathered on Great North Rd to voice their concerns about losing the venue. Craig Steinbring, a member of the Western Springs Speedway Association, reported that attendance was lower than expected. He estimated that between 500 and 1,000 people joined the rally. Three rival proposals are now being considered for how to develop the stadium facilities at the Western Springs site. The final race at the current location will take place later this evening.
