Hungary can dissent without blocking EU decisions
Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is making waves in the European Union. Recently, he tried to block EU proposals for aid to Ukraine after American support was cut. However, the other 26 EU countries chose to move forward without him. Despite Hungary's objections, the EU went ahead with a statement on Ukraine. This statement was announced as a conclusion from the remaining 26 nations. EU diplomats say this might become a regular approach, allowing them to bypass Hungary's dissent. One senior diplomat noted that this new way of operating reflects the political reality in the EU. They emphasized the importance of aligning efforts among the 26 countries when consensus with Hungary is not achievable. According to top EU officials, Hungary’s stance is now being factored in but largely disregarded. They acknowledged there is a clear division with Hungary, but they are committed to making progress among the other member states. In a recent meeting, European leaders also gained support from Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico, further isolating Hungary in their efforts. This shift indicates a changing dynamic within the EU as it adapts to new challenges.
