Hyderabad doctors warn against excessive water consumption
Doctors in Hyderabad are warning the public about the dangers of drinking excessive amounts of water too quickly. As temperatures rise this summer, they have seen an increase in cases of water intoxication, known as hyponatremia. Hyponatremia occurs when the sodium levels in the blood drop dangerously low. A recent case involved a 75-year-old man who was admitted to the ICU after consuming too much water, leading to severe weakness and pneumonia. He was found to have very low sodium levels due to his excessive water intake. In another instance, a 40-year-old woman drank four liters of water in a single morning for detoxification. This caused her to experience a headache, nausea, and a seizure, resulting in her hospitalization. Doctors noted that she had been misled by health advice suggesting that drinking large amounts of water could clear toxins from her body. Both patients survived, but there have been tragic cases, such as a 35-year-old woman in the U.S. who died after drinking two liters of water in just 20 minutes. The death of martial artist Bruce Lee in 1973 was also linked to water intoxication. Doctors explain that large amounts of water can dilute the blood and lower sodium levels, which is critical for bodily functions. They recommend spreading water consumption throughout the day instead of consuming it all at once. Physicians emphasize the need for balanced water intake, especially for the elderly, who may have more health issues.
