Hyderabad households heavily rely on water tankers
In Hyderabad, around 13 lakh households are registered for water supply, but only about 42,000 rely on tankers for water. Of these, 22,000 households repeatedly order tankers, accounting for nearly 90% of the total 2.84 lakh tankers supplied. This information was shared by Ashok Reddy, the Managing Director of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB). During a 75-day survey, it was found that 500 households had booked 31,000 tankers. Many of these households lacked rainwater harvesting systems. Mr. Reddy stated that if they had functioning systems, their dependence on tankers might have been reduced. While speaking at an event for World Water Day, Mr. Reddy emphasized the importance of water, comparing it to oxygen. He mentioned that HMWS&SB provides drinking water to about 30 crore people. He explained that high water consumption in Hyderabad increases demand. The city imports water from sources located up to 150 kilometers away due to insufficient groundwater. Mr. Reddy urged everyone to understand water as a limited resource and to use it wisely. To promote this message, he launched a campaign vehicle focused on water conservation. This 10-day campaign will include awareness programs across all city divisions.
