Health issues related to high blood pressure are on the rise in Chandigarh. A recent report indicates that 35.5% of adults in the region suffer from hypertension, a figure significantly higher than the national average. Alarmingly, 50% of individuals over the age of 45 have been reported to have high blood pressure. Hypertension is often referred to as a silent killer. Many people do not realize they have it because it usually shows no symptoms. Doctors warn that high blood pressure can lead to serious health problems, including heart attacks, strokes, and kidney damage. One major cause of hypertension is excessive salt intake. Dr. Ashok Yadav from PGI reports that the World Health Organization recommends a daily sodium intake of just 2 grams, but many people consume 8 grams. High sodium levels cause the body to retain water, increasing blood volume and putting extra strain on the heart. To combat this growing health issue, PGI is organizing special diet clinics to educate the public about the importance of managing high blood pressure. Chief Dietician Dr. Nancy Sahni emphasizes a balanced diet that includes proper hydration and appropriate salt intake. A recent survey conducted by the diet clinics found that many people are not consistent with their medication for high blood pressure. Some do not believe they need medication, while others forget or stop taking it when they feel better. This risky behavior can lead to severe health complications if hypertension is not properly managed.
