Drivers are being alerted about the most stolen cars in 2024. A report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) has highlighted two Hyundai models that are frequently targeted by thieves. The Hyundai Elantra and Sonata are at the top of the list. In total, 850,708 vehicles were reported stolen in 2024. This is a significant drop compared to recent years, when over one million vehicles were stolen in both 2022 and 2023. The report notes that certain Hyundai and Kia models are easier to steal because they lack an important anti-theft device known as an immobilizer. The NICB report explains that this absence allows thieves to start these vehicles without the proper key. After receiving lawsuits related to these thefts, Hyundai has introduced a security kit designed to alarm and immobilize the car. However, some drivers find the kit too expensive. Despite the thefts, there was a noticeable decrease in auto theft overall, with a 17% drop from the previous year. This marks the first time since 2021 that the number of stolen vehicles fell below one million. Some states, like Washington, Nevada, and Oregon, saw the biggest declines in theft rates. David J. Glawe, the CEO of NICB, attributed the decrease in thefts to collaboration between law enforcement and automakers. He emphasized the importance of using data to create strategies aimed at preventing vehicle theft. While some states have reported reductions in theft, Maine is the only state that saw an increase, rising by 2% in 2024. The NICB also provided tips for drivers to avoid theft, such as not leaving keys in the car, parking in well-lit areas, and hiding valuables. If a car is stolen, drivers should report it to the authorities and their insurance as soon as possible.
