ICC issues arrest warrants for Israeli leaders Netanyahu and Gallant over alleged war crimes
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes related to the Gaza conflict. This marks a significant development as it is the first time leaders from a democratic, Western-aligned state face such charges. All 124 member countries of the Rome Statute are now obligated to detain Netanyahu and Gallant if they enter their territories. However, Israel does not recognize the ICC's authority, and many member states, including the UK, Germany, and France, are unlikely to arrest them. Countries like Canada, Italy, and the Netherlands have confirmed they will comply with the ICC warrants. Dutch officials stated they would arrest Netanyahu if he arrives in the Netherlands, while Canadian leaders emphasized their commitment to international law.
