ICC president criticizes US and Russia for undermining international justice
International Criminal Court (ICC) President Tomoko Akane criticized the U.S. and Russia for interfering with the court's work. She described their actions as "appalling," citing sanctions and threats that undermine international justice. This follows U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham's recent dismissal of the ICC as a "dangerous joke." The ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders amid the Gaza conflict, marking a significant move against a major Western ally. U.S. President Joe Biden condemned the warrants as "outrageous," contrasting them with his support for charges against Russian President Vladimir Putin for war crimes in Ukraine. Akane also addressed allegations against ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan, who faces scrutiny over misconduct claims. While an inquiry was dropped, an external investigation is underway. The ICC is set to conclude its current trials, leaving no active cases, complicating its enforcement capabilities.
